Climate change and insect defoliation in the New Jersey Pine Barrens
-
CBI, in collaboration with the US Forest Service, will assess and predict the effects of gypsy moth defoliation events, fire management, and climate change on forest productivity, species composition, and tree mortality in the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Using management scenarios developed based on current management practices and potential carbon management practices; we will determine how interactions among these disturbances affect management goals. This project will help provide a predictive framework for working through landscape to regional management scenarios in areas with multiple, interacting management priorities that can be applied across the US, especially in areas where insect and fire disturbances interact. Southern Sierra Nevada Fisher Assessment
-
The Pacific fisher (Martes pennanti) is a large member of the weasel family associated with dense, structurally complex, low- to mid-elevation forests in California and Oregon. Remaining populations are small, disconnected from one another, and threatened by habitat modification and fragmentation. In 2004, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service found that Pacific fishers were warranted protection under the Endangered Species Act, but that listing the species was precluded by higher priorities. A Population Monitoring Framework For Five Subspecies of Island Fox
-
Due to their limited geographic distribution and small population sizes, foxes on all six islands have been listed as Threatened by the State of California, and all subspecies except those on San Nicolas and San Clemente have been listed as Endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service due to recent precipitous population declines and high risk of extinction. In response to a request from the Recovery Coordination Group of the Island Fox Integrated Recovery Team, the Conservation Biology Institute was commissioned to develop a monitoring framework for the foxes.
