Species Monitoring
Projects involving species monitoring
The following projects involve species monitoring:
Southern Sierra Nevada Fisher Assessment
The Pacific fisher (Martes pennanti) is a large member of the weasel family associated with dense, structurally complex, low- to mid-elevation forests in California and Oregon. Remaining populations are small, disconnected from one another, and threatened by habitat modification and fragmentation. In 2004, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service found that Pacific fishers were warranted protection under the Endangered Species Act, but that listing the species was precluded by higher priorities. (June 2008)
A Population Monitoring Framework For Five Subspecies of Island Fox
Due to their limited geographic distribution and small population sizes, foxes on all six islands have been listed as Threatened by the State of California, and all subspecies except those on San Nicolas and San Clemente have been listed as Endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service due to recent precipitous population declines and high risk of extinction. In response to a request from the Recovery Coordination Group of the Island Fox Integrated Recovery Team, the Conservation Biology Institute was commissioned to develop a monitoring framework for the foxes. (June 2007)
Ramona Grasslands Habitat Management Planning
A science-based adaptive habitat management plan for the approximately 3,000-acre Ramona Grasslands Open Space Preserve in central San Diego County. (January 2007)
Maintaining Ecological Connectivity Across the “Missing Middle” of the Puente-Chino Hills Wildlife Corridor
An analysis of studies of wildlife movement in this area of the LA basin with recommendations for conservation and management. (July 2005)
Wildlife Corridor Monitoring Study - Multiple Species Conservation Program
CBI conducted wildlife corridor surveys for two consecutive years to assess uses by different mammal species. (March 2003)
Review of Regional Habitat Linkage Monitoring Locations
An assessment of the general locations of regional corridor monitoring locations identified in the MSCP Biological Monitoring Plan and refinement of the overall monitoring locations for the MSCP. (January 2003)
Review of Scientific Material Relevant to the Occurence, Ecosystem Role, and Tested Management Options for Mountain Goats in Olympic National Park
A review of three conditions necessary to justify control or eradication of the mountain goat in Olympic National Park. (May 2000)
The Abundance and Distribution of Eelgrass (Zostera spp.) in Tillamook Bay Estuary, OR
A study to accurately map eelgrass beds throughout Tillamook Bay in an effort to establish an initial baseline of eelgrass bed density and distribution for future monitoring. (September 1996)
