As California strives to meet its renewable energy goals over the coming decades, it continues to pursue new opportunities, including offshore wind resources off the coast. Using emerging floating technology, a number of energy developers have expressed interest in developing wind resources along California’s coastline, which has prompted the federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and the California Energy Commission to coordinate and conduct a preliminary feasibility assessment. CBI has been hired to build a Data Basin Gateway (caoffshorewind.databasin.org) and to collate, curate and process relevant datasets. This is part of the early review phase by an interagency taskforce with stakeholder input to see if offshore wind development is possible with minimal impact on existing uses as well as potential impacts on the marine ecosystem.
