Framework for monitoring and research that will ensure the long-term persistence of island endemic

scrub jayCBI is working with multiple conservation partners, including The Nature Conservancy, Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, and Cornell Lab of Ornithology, to develop a framework for monitoring and research that will ensure the long-term persistence of the Island Scrub-Jay, the only insular endemic bird species in North America.

The species’ global range, currently restricted to 250-km2 Santa Cruz Island, is the smallest of any North American bird.  Management actions to reduce extinction risk in the face of global climate change include vaccination, captive propagation, biosecurity measures, and establishing a second free-living population on Santa Rosa Island.
