The almost 3,000-acre Royal Gorge property on Donner Summit in the Sierra Nevada has long been a target of conservationists. Sitting at the cross-roads of the Sierra Nevada ecoregion−along the east-west Emigrant Trail and the north-south Pacific Crest Trail−and surrounded by protected and intact lands, this iconic property fills a significant piece of the conservation puzzle in the north-central Sierra. Scenery and history alone, along with opportunities for hiking and cross-country skiing, make this property a coveted target for development, as well as for conservation. CBI prepared a report that evaluates conservation values and land use management opportunities for this property to help Sierra Watch and other land trusts plan responsibly for the property’s future.
